SHEPARD FAIREY SUED?

Friday 13 March 2009 by ..:: IAMRAV ::..

UNLESS YOU'VE BEEN TRAPPED UNDER JIM ROYALE'S ARSE I'M SURE YOU'VE SEEN THE THE ICONIC OBAMA 'HOPE' ARTWORK ABOUT. BEHIND THE STENCIL WAS GRAFFITI CREATIVE SHEPARD FAIREY, WHO IS NOW BEING SUED FOR HIS RECREATION OF THE ORIGINAL IMAGE! THIS WAS SOURCED FROM THE GUARDIAN ONLINE...

''Shepard Fairey, the graffiti artist whose Obama Hope poster became the face of Obama's presidential campaign, was sued this week by the Associated Press, owners of the original photograph on which Fairey's artwork was based. Fairey filed a preemptive lawsuit against AP last month, claiming he had changed the image so dramatically it didn't violate copyright law. It'll be up to the court to decide whether Fairey's portrait is classed as an original work in its own right, or a copy made without permission''

...WELL MR. MANNIE GARCIA, THE GUY WHO TOOK THE PHOTOGRAPH ON THE LEFT OF THE ARTWORK, FAIREY'S WORK IS A STENCIL RECREATION! HE IS NOT CLAIMING THE ORIGINAL IMAGE TO BE HIS OWN BUT THE ARTWORK THAT WAS MADE. EVERY CREATIVE KNOWS THAT RE-INTERPRETATION OR RECREATION OF AN ARTWORK DOES NOT MAKE IT ANY LESS LEGIBLE THAN THE ORIGINAL. I MEAN DAMN HOW MANY OF US HAVE TAKEN A IMAGE, SHOVED IT IN ILLUSTRATOR AND USED LIVETRACE? ITS THE EFFECT WE LIKE, WE'RE NOT BOTHERED ABOUT THE ORIGINAL IMAGE THAT'S JUST A REFERENCE! SO PLEASE, STOP CRYING ABOUT THE FACT THAT NO ONE TOOK NOTICE OF YOUR PHOTOGRAPH UNTIL IT WAS STENCILLED...CAPICHE?

this is why photographers are so protective over their work...their afraid graphic creatives can make their work better
